Although lightweight, this banjo really packs a punch, the volume and tone from this instrument is quiet incredible it even surprised me, I never expected it to sound anything like the way it does. The tuning pegs are of the friction type, which were commonplace on the cheaper to mid range banjos the geared types being typical on the higher end instruments. This allowed the arm to be moved backwards, which brought the action down to the required level. I had to make a slight modification on the end of the arm where the dowel stick screws in at the back of the body. I’ve installed a new calfskin vellum and fitted new loop end steel strings: (010, 012. Three of the tension hooks are none matching although, not easy to spot and above all, they do the job of pulling down the head. Other makers also did the same, such as Barnes & Mullins, with or without, including their name. It was most likely made in the 1920s or 1930s? It says ‘British Made’ in gold lettering on the headstock, which was one of George Houghton’s trademarks as well as the gold embossed lion symbol and or G.H.&.S. Possibly 1920s or 1930s? This 5-string banjo could have been made by George Houghton of Birmingham, West Midlands, UK.
